The Haven Program

The Haven is an 89-bed Modified Therapeutic Community (MTC) located in Denver, Colorado for women, mothers and their infants. Licensed by the Colorado Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD), the program offers long-term, intensive treatment for clients with addictions. Clients are referred from the Department of Human Services, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the criminal justice system, homeless shelters, friends and family members, or through self-referral.

Haven HouseEstablished in 1992, The Haven was the first program in Colorado to accept infants into residence while their mothers received substance abuse treatment – keeping children out of the foster care system.  The Haven is part of the Addiction Research and Treatment Services (ARTS) program of the University of Colorado Denver.  Today, The Haven is five facilities located on the Ft. Logan campus and can serve up to 38 pregnant or post-partum women and their infants.

Haven clients typically stay nine to 12 months in residential treatment, followed by an additional 12 months of outpatient MTC treatment services. Long-term outcomes are very positive. In fact, 90.1 percent of mothers who enter The Haven remain drug-, alcohol-, and crime-free two years after completion. [Program Details...]

Program staff is comprised of licensed professionals and certified addictions counselors from a variety of professional fields; many are themselves in recovery from substance addiction. Medicaid is accepted for women (if eligible) who enter the program while pregnant.

A Capital Campaign for a New Baby Haven

Built on hope
Built for babies
Built with love

Friends of the Haven is a not-for-profit organization (501c.3) created to provide financial and volunteer support for the Haven and its programs. In early 2008, Friends of the Haven initiated a capital campaign to secure the financial resources to build a new Baby Haven complex, expanding and improving care with this uniquely designed and appropriate facility for the Haven’s babies.

Located on the grounds of Ft. Logan in Denver, Colorado, the Haven serves women with serious substance abuse problems and addiction. Often these women were referred to the Haven in lieu of incarceration for drug-related crimes. These women commit themselves to change through the Haven’s long-term therapeutic process of recovery, becoming able to care for their babies and build new lives as independent community members and healthy parents. The mothers often attribute their successful recovery to their infants. Like all mothers, they want a normal and happy life for their children something they never experienced –and this motivates their recovery. The Haven Homes, including the Baby Haven, were originally built for families of Army officers in the late 1800s. The current Baby Haven, housed in what was once officer’s quarters, is approximately 118 years old and is not programmatically or structurally able to meet the needs of a therapeutic nursery and home for babies.

The financial goal for the Capital Campaign for a New Baby Haven is $3.675 million dollars. Our dream is to make this new home a reality. This amount covers costs of the design and construction of the facility, as well as resources needed to expand and substantially improve the quality of the Baby Haven’s programs and offerings – an investment in the lives and futures of the Haven babies. We are making progress towards reaching this goal but more is needed.
